Book Review - “Blue Is The Warmest Color” By Julie Maroh, translated by Ivanka Hahnenberger

“Blue Is The Warmest Color” is a graphic novel that follows the protagonist, Clementine, as she moves through the motions of growing up, while trying to make sense of her infatuation with Emma: the girl with blue hair. Throughout the story Clem challenges the idea of her own identity, family and friendships.

“Blue Is The Warmest Color” is a great entry point into the graphic novel genre. The text is structured around diary entries which act like traditional chapter breaks, which makes it easy to read. The written text is fast-paced, while the images offer a tender unfolding of Clem’s life. All of this contributes to a story that is exhilarating and emotive.

Graphic Novel Review—Safari Honeymoon by Jesse Jacobs

A newlywed couple spend their honeymoon on a safari. They venture deeper into the jungle and revel in the flora and fauna that surrounds them. But some of the wildlife they encounter is a little unusual, and the landscape conjures stirrings within them that go beyond the animalistic urge to consummate the marriage.

With a drained palette of pale greens and whites Jacobs creates a richly patterned, monochromatic world of curiosity. Switching between the narrative of the couple and descriptions of surreal biological processions, the bizarre interactions with life forms that resemble the molecular in the peculiar landscape culminates magnificently in an ending that emphasizes a symbiotic, unicolour world.

A richly imagined, skilfully crafted wonder world of distinctive beauty.

Film Review—Guardians of the Galaxy

The least anticipated but arguably the most enjoyable entry in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. Guardians of the Galaxy features Peter Quill (AKA Star-Lord) a half-human half-alien  thief, Gamora, the personal assassin of an intergalactic warlord, Drax the Destroyer, a warrior vigilante, and bounty hunters Rocket, a raccoon-like alien experiment, and Groot, a sentient tree-like humanoid. This rag tag group must team up to stop an evil Kree zealot from destroying the planet Xandar. Make sense? No? That’s absolutely fine, as the franchise as a whole and this entry in particular is about having a great deal of nerdy fun.

It does suffer from many of the follies inherent in comic book films, most notably a ridiculous two-dimensional villain, predictable plot, and chance occurrences up the galactic wazoo. But it is fun, has perfectly executed humour, enough references and Easter eggs to keep the fan boys entertained for several hours, and a killer sound track.
